On January 28, the Zonta Club of Birmingham and the Alabama Chapter of the 99s hosted the Annual Amelia Earhart Luncheon. We would like to thank everyone that attended the event and participated in our silent auction. We raised $1982 for the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchinson, Kansas. Our guest speaker this year was Major Sarah Todd Green, USAF.
Maj Sarah Todd Green was commissioned into the United States Air Force from AFROTC Det 005 at Auburn University in May 2010. She entered active duty as an Air Battle Manager and spent the first years of her career at Robins AFB, GA, flying as an Air Weapons Officer on the E-8C JSTARS. In 2014, Maj Green was selected to attend Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training at Laughlin AFB, TX and in 2016, she received her current assignment flying the U-28A Draco at Hurlburt Field, FL. She has over 1,000 civilian flying hours, flying everything from a Piper J-3 Cub to a Citation CJ-3. In her time on active duty, she has acquired over 2,200 flying hours, with over 1,200 of those in combat. She has deployed 7 times in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, FREEDOM’S SENTINEL, and INHERENT RESOLVE, serving in Qatar, Djibouti, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Maj Green is currently serving as the 1st Special Operations Wing Chief of Operations (A3), where she leads 89 Airmen from 16 different specialties.
We also awarded our 2023 Minnie Wade Memorial Scholarship to Samy-Rae Brain. The Alabama Chapter’s Minnie Wade Memorial Scholarship is an annual scholarship open to any female residing in Alabama. All females with a student pilot’s certificate can sign up as a Ninety-Nine at www.ninety-nines.org. Please see our article about Minnie Wade to read more about this amazing woman. Samy-Rae will be using the funds to receive her Seaplane Rating.
